Seal of Imperial IntelligenceCryptanalysis, often referred to within Imperial Intelligence simply as Crypt, is the branch of the Analysis Bureau responsible for all code-breaking and the analysis of encrypted communications. It is the final technical stage through which coded material must pass before its contents can be used by the rest of the organization.

Origin and Function

Cryptanalysis was formed from the Cryptanalysis Department of the former Senate Bureau of Intelligence and retained much of that department’s specialized expertise when Imperial Intelligence was established. Its primary task is the decryption of material discovered by Media and Signal. When those branches identify evidence of coded communication, the material is transferred to Crypt for systematic examination and, when possible, recovery of the underlying message.

The branch maintains the mathematical, computational, and procedural resources required to attack a wide range of encryption systems. Successful decryption produces readable intelligence that is then passed upward for evaluation by the Intelligence Bureau or for operational use by the Bureau of Operations.

Character

Personnel of Cryptanalysis have long cultivated a reputation for eccentricity. Within the branch they refer to themselves as “lignyots.” In the past this reputation was reinforced by a tendency to send routine scandocs to other branches in simple codes that, if not broken promptly, would resolve into unflattering holos of the recipients. While such practices have been curtailed, the branch retains a distinctive internal culture that sets it apart from the more formal atmosphere of other Intelligence components.

Despite the informal reputation, the technical standards of Cryptanalysis remain high. The work requires sustained concentration, advanced mathematical ability, and a willingness to pursue difficult problems over extended periods.

Place within Analysis

Cryptanalysis depends on Media and Signal for the bulk of its raw material and, in turn, supplies the decrypted product that allows those discoveries to become actionable intelligence. It also works with Tech when specialized computational or analytical equipment is required. The branch does not conduct field operations of its own; its value is measured entirely by the quality and volume of the communications it successfully recovers.

Through the patient and systematic breaking of enemy codes, Cryptanalysis ensures that encrypted traffic does not remain beyond the reach of Imperial Intelligence.
