The Assassination Group

Assassination is the branch of the Bureau of Operations responsible for the removal of individuals whose continued activity is judged to pose a significant threat to the security or stability of the Galactic Empire. Within Imperial Intelligence the practice is regarded as a legitimate and, when properly authorized, necessary instrument of state policy.

Approach

Assassination cultivates the public image of a fair contest between hunter and prey. In practice its operatives take every available advantage. Targets are selected with care, and operations are planned so that the probability of success is high and the risk of exposure is kept as low as possible. The branch does not waste resources on speculative or poorly prepared attempts.

Since the formal prohibition on the use of assassin droids for such work, Assassination has relied primarily on human and near-human operatives. Specialized equipment and technical support are still employed when they improve the chances of a clean result, but the final responsibility rests with the agent or team assigned to the task.

Authorization and Oversight

No Assassination operation is undertaken on the initiative of the branch alone. Targets are identified through the normal processes of Imperial Intelligence and must receive formal authorization before any action is taken. Once authorization is granted, the branch is expected to execute the assignment with precision and to leave as little evidence as possible of Imperial involvement.

Successful operations are not publicized. The value of Assassination lies in the quiet removal of obstacles rather than in any demonstration of capability.

Place within the Bureau

Assassination works in coordination with the other branches of the Bureau of Operations when required. Surveillance may be called upon to confirm a target’s movements. Infiltration may provide access or background information. In the majority of cases, however, Assassination operates with a high degree of independence once the assignment has been approved.

By maintaining strict standards of preparation and authorization, the branch ensures that the removal of key individuals remains a controlled and purposeful tool of Imperial policy rather than an uncontrolled instrument of personal or political vengeance.
