The Renik Group

Renik is the counter-intelligence branch of the Bureau of Operations. Its primary responsibility is the identification and disruption of enemy intelligence activities directed against the Galactic Empire.

Mission

Renik exists to protect Imperial interests from the efforts of hostile intelligence services, resistance networks, and other organizations that seek to gather information or conduct covert operations within Imperial space. Its personnel specialize in detecting the presence of foreign agents, mapping the structure of enemy networks, and neutralizing those networks before they can cause significant harm.

When an enemy intelligence operation is discovered, Renik’s first preference is often to dismantle it completely. In cases where the network is judged to have potential value as a controlled source of information, Renik turns the matter over to Infiltration rather than destroying it outright. This decision is made carefully and only when the benefits of continued observation outweigh the risks of leaving an active hostile presence in place.

Method

Renik works closely with Surveillance and with the system cells of Sector Plexus when continuous observation of suspected agents or facilities is required. It also draws on the analytical resources of the Intelligence and Analysis Bureaus to evaluate the significance of intercepted communications and other indicators of hostile activity.

Because counter-intelligence work frequently involves the examination of Imperial personnel and facilities, Renik maintains a professional distance from the Internal Organization Bureau. The two bodies share information when necessary, but Renik’s focus remains on external threats rather than on the internal security of Imperial Intelligence itself.

Place within the Bureau

Renik is a permanent and essential component of the Bureau of Operations. Its successes are rarely publicized, as the quiet elimination of an enemy network is more valuable than any demonstration of capability. By systematically identifying and removing hostile intelligence efforts, Renik helps ensure that the rest of Imperial Intelligence can operate without constant interference from external adversaries.
