The Signal Group

Signal is the branch of the Analysis Bureau responsible for the technical examination of the channels through which information is transmitted. Its work focuses on the medium rather than the content, seeking hidden or compressed material that would otherwise escape notice.

Function

Signal personnel sample and analyze the technical characteristics of communications traffic. They examine carrier wave codes, CompLink protocols, scan rates on scandocs, and image packs on holos to determine whether vital information is being concealed within the transmission structure itself. They also study line noise for non-random patterns and compare primary transmissions with their backup data to identify discrepancies that may indicate deliberate alteration or embedded content.

The branch does not attempt to read encrypted messages. When evidence of coding is discovered, the material is transferred to Cryptanalysis for decryption. Signal’s contribution is the detection of the anomaly or the hidden channel in the first place.

Method

The work of Signal is highly technical and requires specialized equipment as well as personnel trained in communications engineering and signal processing. Much of the analysis is performed on intercepted or routinely monitored traffic that would appear ordinary to a less thorough examination. The branch’s value lies in its ability to notice what others overlook.

Signal maintains close working relationships with Media, which supplies large volumes of public and semi-public material for technical review, and with Cryptanalysis, which receives any coded content that Signal uncovers. It also draws on Tech when specialized analytical hardware is required.

Place within Analysis

Signal forms a critical link in the technical chain of the Analysis Bureau. By systematically examining the structure of communications rather than their apparent content, the branch ensures that hidden channels and compressed information do not remain invisible to Imperial Intelligence. Its discoveries frequently provide the first indication that more significant material is present, allowing Cryptanalysis and the rest of the organization to act on what would otherwise have been missed.
